Abakaliki — The
amount of dirt, coupled with the kind of social life, especially in the
night, in Obuhausa community in Abakaliki, the Ebonyi State capital, has
continued to raise concern with many describing the filthy nature of
the area as an eyesore and its night activities as a new Sodom and
Gomorrah as related in the Bible.
Obuhausa community
is located at the heart of Abakaliki, with hundreds of structures which
comprise of storey, bungalows and many tenement buildings, which start
from the new market axis, cutting unto some sections of the ever busy
Gunning road, Water Works road and part of Ogoja road.
With about seven entry and exit points, Obuhausa is an assembly of a few Ibos, a large population of Hausas and other tribes.
The area is not
only a community of Nigerians, it is also home to some foreign Muslims,
particularly migrants from Niger and Chad who on daily basis display on
the streets in the capital city their herbs and drugs for interested
consumers to buy.
But most worrisome
about the area is the fact that food and meat are prepared in unhygienic
environment and in the open. Flies that feed from the nearby gutters
and dustbins or from damaged sewage perch on the food and drop dirt on
them before, during and after cooking.
Also prominent in
the area, which is also called Hausa quarters, is the presence of hotels
that sell alcoholic drinks and also house prostitutes who ply their
trade day and night. These women could be seen posing in their
provocative dresses as they search of prospective customers.
The area also has a
prevalence of other crimes. Marijuana and other intoxicants are readily
available in the area which is reputed as the zone with the highest
number of sex hawkers in the entire state
